Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2004 1¢ WDDO-013 and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-020, this Lincoln Memorial Cent displays doubling manifesting as extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY and the lower hair and beard details of Lincoln's portrait. The extra thickness pattern — where doubled elements appear bolstered rather than showing separated secondary images — indicates a close-spread hub displacement where the primary and secondary impressions overlap substantially, creating wider letter strokes and fuller portrait features rather than distinct ghost images. Obverse die markers include a die gouge touching the top of the 4 in the date and another die gouge below the horizontal bar of the 4, providing two closely positioned markers within the date that serve as quick identification points. Reverse markers include a die gouge just under the top left of the first T in STATES and additional gouges that fingerprint the reverse die. The Crawford CDDO-020 cross-reference connects this variety to Billy G. Crawford's independent cataloging system, confirming the variety through two separate attribution authorities. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2004 in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse Lincoln portrait, and the lower hair and beard detail area affected by the doubling sits at a transition zone on the portrait where fine engraved lines represent hair texture — lines whose thinness makes them sensitive indicators of even slight hub displacement. The dual die gouges flanking the horizontal bar of the 4 in the date provide a particularly efficient field attribution method.
