2004 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011

Description

Listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 2004 1c WDDO-011, this Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent shows extra thickness on LIBERTY and the date, with notches on the upper left of ERTY. Obverse die markers include a die gouge SW of the bowtie, a die gouge in the field to the right of the upper lip, and a die gouge on the lower vest. Reverse markers include die gouges below the N in UNITED, a die gouge to the right of the bottom of the last column, a die gouge north of the F in the designer's initials, and two die gouges inside the lower O of ONE. Doubled die obverse varieties arise when the obverse working die receives a second hubbing at a slight misalignment, leaving a doubled outline on portrait and lettering. The thickening of LIBERTY and the date is the primary visual diagnostic on WDDO-011, with ERTY notching providing additional confirmation. The 2004 cent is struck in copper-plated zinc at Philadelphia. The die gouge markers on both sides provide a robust confirmation package, and 2004 dates represent the penultimate years of the classic Memorial reverse before its 2009 retirement.
