2003 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-016

Description

The 2003-P Lincoln Memorial cent WDDR-016 places its doubled die evidence in a specific architectural detail: doubling shows on the lower left side of the seventh column to the right of the statue's feet, and — most strikingly — an extra foot appears between the two feet of the Lincoln Memorial statue. This ghostly additional foot, a product of the shifted hub impression during die manufacture, is one of the more visually arresting doubling manifestations in the Lincoln cent series and makes this variety immediately recognizable to informed collectors. Wexler Variety ID: 2003 1c WDDR-016. Die markers span both faces. On the obverse, a small die gouge sits just above the left side of the 3 in the date; a dot-form die gouge appears west-southwest of the I in IN; and die pitting marks the field well east of the lower profile. On the reverse, a die gouge appears above the top-left of the N in ONE, and a dot-form die gouge sits inside the lower N of UNITED. The Lincoln Memorial cent was struck on copper-plated zinc by 2003. The extra-foot doubling makes WDDR-016 an accessible variety for collectors new to Lincoln cent doubled dies.
