Five years into the new millennium, the 2003 Lincoln Memorial Cent continued producing spiked heads with the same regularity that characterized the series throughout its history. SKH-1c-2003-03 is the third cataloged variety for the year, indicating a modest but real presence of portrait-rim die cracking in Philadelphia's early 2000s production. The 2003 date occupies a quiet period in Lincoln cent history — after the 1999 zinc shortage concerns but before the 2009 Bicentennial redesign — when the Memorial reverse was simply a workhorse denomination produced in vast quantities with little public attention. This obscurity makes die varieties from the early 2000s somewhat underrepresented in the catalog, as fewer collectors may have been actively searching rolls during this window compared to the heightened activity of the late 1990s or the post-2010 Shield era. Brenner's portrait and Gasparro's Memorial were entering their ninety-fourth and forty-fourth years of service respectively.
