2002 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2002 1c WDDR-011, this doubled die reverse variety on the 2002 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent displays doubling on the lower left side of the 7th Memorial column to the right of the Lincoln statue's legs, with an extra knee visible between the statue's legs — a diagnostic strikingly similar to the 2007 WDDR-003 and indicating that the columnar structure of Gasparro's Memorial interior consistently reveals hub displacement at this location. Die markers on the obverse include a small die gouge below the B in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a small die gouge (dot) appears to the left of the top of the first Memorial column, and die pitting can be found to the right of the top of the T in CENT. The extra knee effect occurs because the statue within the Memorial is rendered at such fine scale that even minor lateral hub offset produces a discernible secondary image of the knee area between the leg outlines. No supplementary cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are known. The 2002 Lincoln Cent was struck at Philadelphia in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper plating) at 2.5 grams and 19 mm diameter with a plain edge. The Lincoln Memorial reverse design served the cent from 1959 through 2008, a 49-year span that produced thousands of documented die varieties across hundreds of millions of dies.
