2002 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008

Description

Tony Russo submitted this Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, which exhibits doubling on the right side of column six to the left of the Lincoln statue's upper legs. The obverse carries several die markers: a small die gouge to the left of the I in IN, a small die gouge inside the second zero in the date, and another small die gouge to the right of the lower bust. A die scratch running WNW to ESE at the top of the eighth bay and a die crack running northeast from the top of the fifth column mark the reverse die. Additional reverse diagnostics include a die gouge touching the bottom right of the N in UNITED and a small die gouge touching the top right of the T in CENT. The Wexler Variety ID is 2002 1 cent WDDR-008. Lincoln Memorial cents from this era were produced in copper-plated zinc, and the softer die steel used during high-volume Philadelphia production occasionally allowed subtle hub doubling to reach circulation. Locating the doubling requires careful examination of the sixth column under at least moderate magnification.
