Description

Column doubling distinguishes this Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent reverse, attributed as Wexler Variety ID: 2002 1¢ WDDR-006, which displays doubling on the central left side of the seventh column to the right of the statue. Column doubling on the Memorial reverse is among the most commonly encountered forms of hub doubling on this denomination, as narrow vertical columns serve as sensitive indicators of positional differences between hub impressions. Frank Gasparro's design, featuring twelve columns flanking a central seated Lincoln, proved exceptionally productive for DDR discoveries throughout its 1959-2008 span. The seventh column occupies a position near the colonnade's center, where hub displacement manifests with clarity against surrounding geometry. The 2002 Philadelphia cent was produced in substantial quantities, and WDDR-006 represents one of at least six DDR varieties for this date. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait continued to anchor the obverse. Collectors searching for Memorial cent DDRs should examine columns under magnification, comparing thickness against reference images to identify hub doubling. Die Markers: Obverse: Light die scratches run NNW from the top left of the Y in LIBERTY. Reverse: A small die gouge (dot) can be found to the right of the bottom of the S in PLURIBUS. A small die gouge (dot) can be found below the second S in STATES.
