Description

Doubling on the central right side of the sixth Memorial column to the left of the statue distinguishes this fifth doubled die reverse for the 2002 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent. Column 6 is one of the most common locations for identifiable doubled die reverses on Memorial Cents because its proximity to the seated Lincoln figure places it in an area of concentrated fine detail where displacement is readily observable. Multiple obverse die markers confirm the specific die pair: a small die gouge sits just above the second zero in the date, and a die gouge appears in the field to the left of the back of the upper head. On the reverse, a die gouge can be found to the right of the lower second A in AMERICA. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2002 1¢ WDDR-005, this variety benefits from three distinct die markers spread across both sides, providing collectors with robust diagnostic points for confirming attribution. The 2002-P cent was produced in substantial quantity during the closing years of the Memorial reverse design, and these markers collectively identify the die pair with confidence.
