Description

Documented by VarietyVista as UVC-3254 with DMR-022, this 2002 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent displays a medium westward spread manifesting as an extra column number 7, the column positioned between the statue's hand and ankle level. Three die stages track the die's working life: Stage A shows the reverse at early die state while the obverse has already reached mid-die state, suggesting the two dies in this pair were at different points in their service lives; Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed); and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The Lincoln Memorial reverse designed by Frank Gasparro contains twelve columns across the front of the building, each rendered as a thin vertical line, and doubled die varieties that produce extra columns represent one of the most visually striking forms of Memorial cent doubling. Column number 7, counted from left to right, falls in the central portion of the facade near the Lincoln statue, an area where hub misalignment tends to produce the most visible effects. The 2002 Philadelphia Mint cent production was substantial, generating billions of coins and consuming numerous die pairs throughout the year. Twenty-one documented doubled die reverses for this date reflects the systematic efforts of variety researchers who examine these high-volume production years, and the different die states between obverse and reverse in Stage A provide insight into Mint die management practices.
