Description

Carrying an unusually broad set of cross-references — CONECA 1-O-VIII, Crawford CDDO-001, and Wexler Variety ID 2001 1¢ WDDO-001 — the first documented doubled die obverse on the 2001 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent displays extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY, the lower hair and beard details, and the date, along with notching on the upper left and lower right letters of LIBERTY. The CONECA designation 1-O-VIII classifies this as a Class VIII (tilted hub) doubled die under the Combined Organizations of Numismatic Error Collectors of America system, while the Crawford CDDO-001 reference connects it to the Crawford attribution guide — a complementary catalog that sometimes documents varieties not yet listed in other systems or provides alternative attribution photographs. The multi-system cross-referencing means this variety has been independently verified and cataloged by at least three different attribution organizations, providing exceptional confidence in the identification. The notching visible on LIBERTY letters — particularly on the upper left portions of the leftmost letters and the lower right portions of the rightmost letters — is a characteristic signature of Class VIII tilted hub doubling, where the progressive angular displacement across the word creates varying amounts of offset that manifest as stepped edges on different parts of the inscription. An obverse die marker — a small die gouge (dot) above the second zero in the date — provides a microscopic confirmation point. No significant reverse markers were noted. The 2001 Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams. The combination of first-discovered status (WDDO-001), multi-system attribution, and visually accessible doubling on LIBERTY and the date makes this one of the more collectible DDO varieties in the early 2000s Memorial Cent series.
