PC-25c-2001P-03R(KY) Pre-Cud
Error
Description
Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, the PC-25c-2001P-03R(KY) is a pre-cud variety discovered on the 2001 Philadelphia Kentucky State Quarter. A pre-cud represents the transitional stage between a simple die crack and a full cud break — the die rim has developed a significant crack that extends from the design area to the edge, but the fractured piece of die metal has not yet broken away entirely. This intermediate stage produces a distinctive raised line on the coin's surface, often accompanied by slight metal displacement along the crack, that differs visually from both hairline die cracks and full retained cuds. The Kentucky State Quarter reverse, designed by T. James Ferrell, depicts a thoroughbred racehorse behind a fence with the Bardstown mansion Federal Hill in the background and the inscription "My Old Kentucky Home." The State Quarters program (1999-2008) produced five designs annually in order of each state's ratification of the Constitution, with Kentucky appearing as the 15th design in 2001. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition weighing 5.67 grams at 24.3 mm diameter with a reeded edge. Pre-cuds on State Quarters are collected as a distinct category within the broader die break spectrum, and their evolutionary nature — documented from initial crack through full cud development — provides insight into die failure mechanics under production pressures.
