CU-25c-2001P-05(KY) Cud

Description

The fifth documented cud for Philadelphia-mint 2001 quarters, CU-25c-2001P-05(KY) from CudsOnCoins records a die rim fracture on a Kentucky State Quarter. Kentucky was the fifteenth state admitted to the Union, and its quarter — released in 2001 as part of the 50 State Quarters Program — features a thoroughbred racehorse behind a fence with the inscription "My Old Kentucky Home" and Federal Hill in the background. The obverse carries John Flanagan's Washington portrait with the P mintmark. State Quarters generated unprecedented public interest in coin collecting between 1999 and 2008, and die variety researchers documented errors across all fifty designs. Cuds occur when die rim segments fracture under repeated striking pressure, producing raised featureless areas. Philadelphia's 2001 production was substantial to meet collector demand for five new reverse designs that year — New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Kentucky. The KY parenthetical in the catalog number specifically attributes this cud to the Kentucky reverse die rather than the shared Washington obverse die.
