Description

WDDR-009 on the 2001-D Lincoln Memorial Cent shows doubling running from the head to below the feet along the left side of the seventh Memorial column to the right of the Lincoln statue. The vertical extent of this spread — tracing the full height of a single architectural column — is one of the more visually striking column-doubling attributions in the series. Die markers: Obverse shows a strong die break running from the rim east of the D in GOD, nearly forming a premature cud — a significant diagnostic distinguishing this die pairing. Wexler Variety ID: 2001-D 1¢ WDDR-009. The near-cud die break is notable in its own right: premature cuds represent a specific stage in die failure progression, advanced far enough to begin displacing metal but not yet fully separated. Together, the reverse column doubling and the near-cud obverse make this one of the more fully documented 2001-D Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die varieties in the Wexler reference. Denver Mint cents of 2001 were struck on copper-plated zinc planchets. Die Markers: Obverse: A strong die gouge shows near the front of Lincoln’s jacket, level with the bottom of the mint mark. A die gouge shows on Lincoln’s jacket below the buttonhole. Two die gouges show just to the right of the second shoulder fold in Lincoln’s jacket. Reverse: A strong die gouge shows inside the lower left opening of the O in ONE. Two die gouges show ESE and SE from Lincoln’s left foot.
