2001-D Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-2001D-02

Description

Cataloged by MadDieClashes as ADC-1c-2001D-02, this atypical die clash on a 2001 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent preserves an unusually detailed transfer between obverse and reverse dies from a single clash event. The obverse displays parts of the Memorial building including the column bays, the bottom of the steps, and portions of Lincoln's seated statue — all reverse design elements impressed into the obverse die when the dies struck each other without a planchet between them. Conversely, the reverse carries the ghostly outline of Lincoln's obverse portrait: the back of the head, the neck, the eye area, nose, and lips. George Antenucci contributed the specimen for documentation. Atypical die clashes differ from standard clashes in the extent and clarity of the transferred design — standard clashes typically leave only faint partial impressions, while atypical clashes capture substantially more detail, suggesting the dies made contact with greater force or at a slightly different angle than typical. The ADC prefix distinguishes these from ordinary clashes in the MadDieClashes classification system. The 2001-D cent was struck during a period of high-volume production at Denver, where rapid press speeds occasionally allowed dies to contact each other between planchet feeds.
