1999 Atypical Die Clash ADC-25C-1999-01PA

Description

Discovered by Robert Washington, this 1999-P Washington Quarter from the State Quarter series with the Pennsylvania reverse exhibits an atypical die clash. Strong clash marks appear east of Washington's portrait, representing transferred incuse impressions of the letters IBE from LIBERTY and VI from VIRTUE on the Pennsylvania reverse design. Light clash marks may be present within the corresponding text field on the reverse, but the condition of the examined coin prohibited positive identification of reverse clashing. Atypical die clashes differ from standard clashes in that the die-to-die contact occurs at an unusual angle or position, sometimes transferring design elements that would not appear in a normal centered clash event. The 1999 Pennsylvania Quarter was the first issue in the fifty-state quarter program that ran from 1999 through 2008, making it a historically significant series entry. The strength of the obverse clash marks, particularly the clearly transferred IBE and VI letter fragments, ranks this among the more dramatic atypical die clashes documented in the early State Quarter series.
