Description
Stage A documentation of a reverse pre-cud on the 1999 Philadelphia Mint Georgia State Quarter, PC-25c-1999P-02R(GA) captures the earliest observed die state of this rim crack before progressive deterioration. A pre-cud represents the precursor stage to a full cud error: the die rim has developed a crack that propagates from the rim inward toward the design, but the fractured section has not yet broken free. On future strikes from the same die, this crack may widen and eventually cause the fractured piece to separate, creating the cavity that fills with metal to produce the raised, featureless mass of a full cud. The "(GA)" suffix identifies this as the Georgia reverse design — the fourth state quarter issued in the 50 State Quarters program, which launched in January 1999 and generated public interest in coin collecting. Georgia's reverse depicted a peach, the state outline, and a banner reading "Wisdom, Justice, Moderation." The "R" designation confirms the crack appeared on the reverse die. Cross-referenced with no additional catalog numbers and documented on July 15, 2017, this variety was recorded by Cuds on Coins. The 1999-P Georgia quarter marked the dawn of the State Quarters era, and varieties from these inaugural issues carry particular collector interest as foundation pieces of the program.
