Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins with no known cross-reference number (documented 01/30/2023), CU-25c-1999P-01(GA) is a rim cud discovered on the 1999 Philadelphia Georgia State Quarter. A supplementary note identifies a reverse die crack indicated by a "white arrow" annotation in the reference images. Cud errors represent one of the most dramatic forms of die failure, occurring when a piece of the die rim breaks away entirely, leaving a void in the die that produces a raised, featureless blob of metal at the corresponding edge of every coin struck thereafter. The Georgia State Quarter was the fourth issue in the 50 State Quarters Program (1999-2008), designed by T. James Ferrell, featuring a peach, the state outline, a banner reading "Wisdom, Justice, Moderation," and live oak sprigs on the reverse. The 1999-P Georgia quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (5.670 grams, 24.3 mm diameter). The accompanying reverse die crack noted with the "white arrow" suggests progressive die deterioration beyond the primary cud break, as die cracks frequently radiate from or develop alongside major rim breaks due to the stress redistribution that occurs when a portion of the die rim separates. State Quarter cuds are particularly collectible because each of the 50 designs creates a unique combination of the cud's position relative to the state-specific reverse imagery, and Georgia's position as an early issue in the program adds historical significance to this variety.
