1998-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-028

Description

A diagonal bar extending from the upper arm to the upper hand to the right of the Lincoln statue on the seventh column identifies this twenty-eighth doubled die reverse for the 1998 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1998-D 1c WDDR-028. The "bar" or "line" appearing on the statue within the Memorial columns is a characteristic presentation of doubling on Memorial Cents, where the tiny figure of Lincoln visible between the columns provides a highly specific area for secondary hub impressions to manifest. Die markers include a die chip to the left of Lincoln's shoulder on the obverse, a die chip within the upper left side of the O of ONE on the reverse, and a die chip above the right memorial roof. Twenty-eight doubled die reverses documented for a single Lincoln Memorial Cent date and mint attests to the enormous production volumes of the late 1990s, when Denver struck hundreds of millions of cents annually. Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse, in production since 1959, had been in continuous use for nearly four decades by 1998, and the familiar design's fine architectural details — particularly the twelve columns and the tiny seated Lincoln statue within — made it a rich canvas for doubled die detection. No other cross-references are known for this variety.
