1998-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-025
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1998-D 1-cent WDDR-025 with no other known cross-references, this Lincoln Memorial Cent reverse presents an unusual doubling manifestation: a bar extending from below the hand of the Lincoln statue down to the middle of the leg, positioned to the right of the statue on the seventh column. This bar-like artifact represents displaced hub metal that filled a narrow zone between design elements during the secondary hub impression, creating a raised linear feature in the finished die that transfers to struck coins as a visible bar between the statue's hand and leg. No significant obverse die markers were noted, but the reverse carries several attribution points: a die chip to the left of the center of the I in AMERICA, several die chips under and right of the lower right R in AMERICA, die chips to the right of the roof, and a linear grouping of die chips on the right memorial base. The 1998-D Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse, with its detailed rendering of the Lincoln Memorial including the tiny seated Lincoln statue visible between the central columns, provides numerous fine architectural elements where hub displacement can produce distinctive doubled die signatures. The bar between hand and leg on column seven is an uncommonly specific diagnostic that makes this variety straightforward to attribute once a candidate specimen is identified under appropriate magnification.
