Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1998-D 1-cent WDDR-020 and cross-referenced as CONECA 2-R-VIII, this Lincoln Memorial Cent displays a bar extending from the middle of the Lincoln statue's hand to the lower foot, positioned to the right of the statue on the seventh column inside the Memorial. The CONECA classification 2-R-VIII places this as a Class VIII variety in the CONECA doubled die reverse numbering system. Obverse die markers include die chips below the second T of TRUST and a die chip to the east of Lincoln's forehead. Reverse diagnostics show a die chip to the right of the seventh column at the level of the statue's shoulder and a die chip above the right Memorial base. The bar-like doubling from the statue's hand to foot along the seventh column represents a distinctive variety where the hub displacement created a visible connecting line between two points on the miniature seated Lincoln figure — essentially a vertical bar of doubled metal spanning the statue's midsection. Frank Gasparro's detailed Memorial reverse, with its columned interior and small seated Lincoln statue, provides the fine architectural detail that makes such precise doubling diagnostics possible. The 1998-D Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-plated zinc composition at 2.5 grams and 19 mm diameter, with a Denver mintage of 5,032,155,000 cents. The CONECA cross-reference provides independent verification through a second attribution system. Examination under 10x magnification should focus on the column and statue area.
