1998-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-018

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1998-D 1¢ WDDR-018, this Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse displays a bar extending from the upper knee to the upper foot within the Memorial's colonnade — spread doubling affecting the tiny seated Lincoln statue visible between the columns. The variety shows distinctive reverse die markers: a die chip on the mintmark, a large die chip east of the last column, and a die dent at the rim. On the obverse, the doubling manifests in the area of the seventh column, where architectural detail within Gasparro's Memorial design was susceptible to hub displacement. The combination of a die chip directly on the D mintmark and additional chips near the Memorial's columns makes this variety particularly identifiable, as mintmark die chips are among the first features collectors check when screening cents for varieties. Denver's late-1990s Lincoln Cent production ran into the billions, consuming hundreds of working dies annually, and the statistical probability of hub misalignment during die manufacture ensured a steady flow of DDR discoveries for this prolific date range.
