1998-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-017
Error
Description
The 1998-D WDDR-017 Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits hub doubling manifesting as a bar extending from the middle of the statue's knee to the top of the foot, positioned to the right of the statue on the seventh column. This bar-like artifact is created when doubled die displacement bridges the gap between adjacent design elements of the recessed Lincoln statue within the Memorial. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets weighing 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter, no obverse die markers have been noted for this variety. The reverse, however, provides several authentication points: die chips between the lower O and N of ONE, die chips to the left of the middle first Memorial bay, additional die chips in the lower first and middle second Memorial bay, and a die chip above the right Memorial base. The concentration of die chips suggests this die had accumulated some wear before the doubled die coins were produced. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1998-D 1c WDDR-017 with no other known cross-references, this variety was cataloged by the Wexler Team. The Denver Mint produced over 5.03 billion cents in 1998, an enormous mintage that provides both abundant material for cherry-pickers and a proportionally tiny survival rate for any individual die variety. The statue area of the Memorial reverse continues to be one of the most productive zones for discovering new doubled die varieties in the Lincoln Memorial Cents 1959-2008 series.
