1998-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014

Description

Struck at the Denver Mint and attributed by the Wexler Team as Wexler Variety ID: 1998-D 1¢ WDDR-014, this Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse shows a bar extending from the elbow to the upper leg to the right of the statue on the seventh column. This spread doubling within the Memorial's colonnade interior is characteristic of late-1990s Lincoln Cent DDRs, where the tiny seated Lincoln figure and surrounding columns offered fine detail susceptible to hub displacement. Obverse die markers include a die chip above and between the I and B of LIBERTY. On the reverse, a small die chip sits on the side of the upper right roof just touching the outer point, and another die chip appears on the left side of the lower first memorial bay. Denver's 1998 cent production was substantial, running parallel to Philadelphia's output. The presence of die chips on both sides indicates the dies saw meaningful service, and these incuse marks transferred from raised imperfections on the die surface serve as reliable fingerprints for distinguishing this variety from other 1998-D DDR listings in the Wexler catalog.
