1998-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011

Description

Listed by the Wexler Team as 1998-D 1-cent WDDR-011, this Lincoln Memorial Cent is a replacement listing for the original WDDR-011 entry, the coin and documentation for which were irretrievably lost — a circumstance that occasionally occurs in variety numismatics when reference specimens are damaged, misplaced, or destroyed. The doubled die feature manifests as a bar extending from the top of the hand to the upper leg to the left of the Lincoln statue at the sixth column — a localized doubling that creates a visible connection between design elements that should appear separated on a normally struck coin. No obverse die markers have been noted for this variety, but the reverse carries a distinctive set of markers: a die chip to the left of the upper R and inside the lower E in AMERICA, a die chip to the left of the Memorial base approximately two-thirds of the way toward the rim, and a die chip to the left of the middle of the first Memorial column at the level of U in UNITED. These three reverse die chips, distributed at different heights across the left side of the reverse design, provide a spatial pattern that uniquely identifies this reverse die. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in 1998 in copper-plated zinc composition at 2.50 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter, with the obverse designed by Victor David Brenner and the reverse by Frank Gasparro.
