Description

On the 1998-D Lincoln Memorial Cent, DDR-004 displays medium spread to the west, creating an extra partial column at position 7 from shoulder to shin of the Lincoln statue. Cataloged as UVC-3067 and DMR-005 in the VarietyVista system, three die stages have been recorded. Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state. Stage B, at early-to-mid die state, develops a small die chip under the left crossbar of the T of CENT, with the obverse also at EMDS. Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. The extra partial column 7 effect—spanning from shoulder to shin—is one of the more visually engaging forms of Memorial Cent reverse doubling, as it creates a visible secondary architectural element adjacent to the statue. The Stage B die chip under the T of CENT provides a precise attribution marker that is easily located in the denomination area. Collectors should examine the seventh column area under magnification, where the westward spread produces the secondary column impression alongside the primary design.
