1998-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

Cataloged under UVC-2960 / DMR-003 by VarietyVista, the 1998-D DDR-002 Lincoln Memorial cent displays medium spread to the west, creating an extra column #7 visible from the hand to the foot of the seated Lincoln statue. Column #7 — the first column to the right of the central figure — is the primary target for westward hub doubling on Memorial reverses, and the hand-to-foot extent represents nearly the full height of the statue, making this one of the more comprehensive westward column varieties for the date. Confirmed at Early-to-Mid Die State (EMDS) for Stage A on both reverse and obverse, the EMDS classification indicates the die was examined at a transitional point between pristine early strikes and the flow-line accumulation of mid-state production. Stage B progresses to Mid Die State (unconfirmed) and Stage C to Late Die State (unconfirmed). As a Denver Mint issue, this DDR originates from one of the working dies used in that facility's cent production. The hand-to-foot ghost column spans virtually the entire statue and should be identifiable under 10x magnification on well-preserved specimens.
