1997 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-042

Description

Near the upper boundary of the known 1997 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent DDR census, WDDR-042 demonstrates just how prolific doubled die variety production was on this single date. The leap from the early catalog entries like WDDR-008 to the forty-second position reveals a census that expanded dramatically as researchers applied increasingly systematic methods — including high-resolution imaging and online attribution networks — to the enormous volume of 1997 Philadelphia cents in circulation. The Lincoln Memorial reverse, with its regimented columns and geometric symmetry, continued to reward patient examination even at this catalog depth, where each new discovery required differentiation from more than forty previously documented varieties sharing the same date and mint. Identifying WDDR-042 demands attention to its specific die markers and the particular direction, class, and intensity of its hub doubling to distinguish it from its many catalog neighbors. Cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 1997 1c WDDR-042 and attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety speaks to the extraordinary depth achievable in modern die variety research.
