1997 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-040

Description

On the 1997 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial cent, the WDDR-040 documents a bar extending from the top of the statue's foot to the upper base to the right of the statue on the seventh column. This type of extra detail within the tiny Memorial structure requires magnification to appreciate, as the entire building facade spans less than half an inch on the coin. The obverse carries two die chip markers: one below the I of IN and another to the right of the N in IN, positioned about a third from the bottom. On the reverse, a large die chip appears at the left cornice, and a small die chip sits to the left of the top left corner of the P of PLURIBUS. These progressive die chips document a die accumulating metal fatigue during its production run.
