1997 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-036

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1997 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent carries a doubled die reverse presenting as a bar from the lower knee to the upper base, located to the right of the statue on the seventh column. Unlike the sixth-column varieties WDDR-014 and WDDR-026, this doubling appears on the adjacent seventh column and is positioned to the statue's right rather than left, confirming a distinct hubbing event. Struck in copper-plated zinc, the obverse features a die chip below and between the B and E of LIBERTY and another die chip above the right side of the T in LIBERTY. The reverse carries multiple diagnostics: two die chips left of the N in ONE, die chips east of the memorial base, and die chips under the right memorial base at the level of the twelfth column. The concentration of reverse die chips near the base and lower columns creates a distinctive pattern that aids in separating WDDR-036 from other 1997 DDRs. The lower-knee-to-upper-base bar trajectory on the seventh column places this doubling in the lower portion of the statue area, where the seated Lincoln figure meets the memorial's architectural base.
