1997 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-029

Description

Manifesting as a bar extended from the elbow to the upper knee left of the Lincoln statue on the sixth column, the 1997 WDDR-029 Memorial Cent demonstrates how doubled die effects on Gasparro's miniature statue can produce distinctive structural anomalies. The bar represents displaced die metal from the doubling process, creating what appears to be an extra element in the statue's tiny anatomy. Obverse markers include multiple die chips west of the bust well below LIBERTY. The reverse carries a die gouge between the upper C and A of AMERICA, a gouge under the left U in UNITED, and a die chip touching the upper left N of UNITED. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1997 1-cent WDDR-029. The concentration of chips and gouges across both sides provides ample attribution points. The 1997 Philadelphia cent was produced during the late Memorial era, about a decade before the design's 2008 retirement. Twenty-nine documented DDRs for the date reflects sustained variety research.
