1997 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-026
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1997 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent displays a doubled die reverse visible as a bar extending from the statue's shoulder to the middle of the knee, positioned to the left of the statue on the sixth column. While sharing the same column location as WDDR-014, this variety shows a distinctly different bar trajectory — shoulder to mid-knee rather than hand to mid-leg — confirming it originates from a separate die with its own unique hubbing error. Struck in copper-plated zinc, the obverse carries a die gouge in the field east of Lincoln's nose extending well into the open field, a die scratch running south from the rim between the S and T of TRUST, and a die chip east of the bottom of the 7 in the date. The reverse shows several die chips clustered around the statue's right hand, including chips directly over the area where the doubling is most prominent. These overlapping die chips partially obscure the bar-like doubling feature, making examination under good magnification essential for attribution. The shoulder-to-knee bar path and the nose-area die gouge together separate WDDR-026 from other sixth-column varieties.
