1997 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-018

Description

On the reverse of the 1997 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDR-018 exhibits a bar extending from the lower leg to the upper base on the sixth column of the Memorial building. This raised bar, created by hub doubling that displaced a vertical element along the column, documents secondary impressions concentrated in the architectural facade. The sixth column places this diagnostic in the right-center section of the building, readily located by counting columns from either side. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1997 1¢ WDDR-018, this variety focuses on a single well-defined architectural element. The Memorial reverse, produced from 1959 through 2008, features a columned facade where geometric vertical elements display hub displacement as raised bar features spanning portions of the column height. The bar's extent from the lower leg to the upper base covers the lower section, providing a focused examination zone. The 1997 Philadelphia cent belongs to the later production years of the Memorial reverse, and the single-column bar provides an efficient pickup point for collectors examining circulation strikes. Reverse: Two die chips can be found touching the top left crossbar of the T of UNITED. Die scratch extends from the rim through the left upright of the M of AMERICA toward the roof of memorial. Die gouge can be found to the right upper A of AMERICA.
