1997 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1997 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent carries a doubled die reverse that manifests as a bar extending from the bottom of the statue's hand to the middle of the leg, positioned to the left of the statue on the sixth column of the Lincoln Memorial. Struck in copper-plated zinc, this variety belongs to a date with an extensive catalog of DDRs that show doubling in the Memorial's interior architectural details. The bar-like doubling in the statue area results from hub displacement during die manufacture, where the secondary impression shifts just enough to create a raised linear feature connecting anatomical points on the tiny seated Lincoln figure. Obverse die markers include a die gouge south of the B in LIBERTY. The reverse carries four diagnostic features: a die gouge in memorial bay 5 at the level of the statue's upper shoulder, a die gouge at the lower left side of the T in CENT, another die gouge to the right middle of the T in CENT, and a die gouge south of the right corner of the memorial base. The specific column number and bar endpoints — hand to mid-leg on the sixth column — distinguish WDDR-014 from the other 1997 DDR varieties.
