1997 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1997 Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDR-006 shows doubling on the left side of the seventh Memorial column, positioned to the right of the lower legs of the Lincoln statue within the Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial reverse design, used from 1959 through 2008, features twelve columns and a small seated Lincoln figure, making the columns a frequent location for visible doubled die effects. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge appearing as a dot to the left of the lower S in TRUST, and a second die gouge behind Lincoln's head well to the north-northeast of the Y in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a die chip abuts the left side of the cornice — the horizontal architectural element crowning the Memorial facade. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1997 1¢ WDDR-006, this variety demonstrates the level of architectural detail preserved in the Memorial reverse design that provides multiple reference points for pinpointing where doubling manifests.
