Description

Counterpart to the East-spread column #6 variety DDR-002, this 1997 Philadelphia cent DDR-005 shows medium spread in the opposite direction — West on column #7, the westernmost column of the Lincoln Memorial reverse. The secondary column image extends from Lincoln's elbow down to the knee, covering the central portion of the column shaft. West-direction spread displaces the ghost column leftward from the primary, and the elbow-to-knee extent places the visible doubling across the middle segment of the column, leaving the upper (above elbow) and lower (below knee) sections showing only the primary image. This partial-column spread helps distinguish DDR-005 from varieties with full-length column doubling. Medium classification confirms clear separation between primary and secondary column lines under standard magnification. VarietyVista catalogs the die under UVC-3232 and DMR-008 across three stages: Stage A with reverse in Early Die State and obverse at Mid Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). The reverse-EDS/obverse-MDS split at Stage A mirrors the same asymmetric wear pattern documented on DDR-002.
