Description

Appearing as a ghost column along the East side of the Lincoln Memorial, DDR-002 on the 1997 Philadelphia cent shows medium spread on column #6 — the column on the East (right) side of the Memorial facade closest to Lincoln's hand — with the secondary image extending from the hand down to the ankle of the seated statue. On Lincoln Memorial cent reverses, East-spread doubling on column #6 pushes the secondary column image rightward, producing a parallel line that shadows the original column between these two body-reference points. The hand-to-ankle extent covers approximately the upper two-thirds of the column, indicating substantial but not full-length doubling. Medium classification confirms the ghost column separates clearly from the primary under standard magnification. VarietyVista catalogs this die under UVC-3021 and DMR-005 with three documented stages: Stage A with the reverse in Early Die State while the obverse is already at Mid Die State — an unusual split progression — Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The EDS reverse paired with MDS obverse at Stage A suggests the reverse die was newer than its obverse partner.
