1996 Atypical Die Clash ADC-10C-1996-01
Error
Description
ADC-10c-1996-01 While this is a simple, strong clash event that is on a 1996P Roosevelt dime, the underlying error is a bit more complicated. This is explained superbly by Mike Diamond: “You’ve got several things going on here. On the obverse, you’ve got a tremendous case of collar clash, accentuated by a flaring out of the obverse perimeter. On the reverse you’ve got a partial collar error. However, the collar started out in a somewhat higher position. It was forced down as the expanding edge of the coin met, and scraped across, the top of the collar. This stretched out the reeding traces on the edge of the coin. It’s essentially the same thing as a ‘forced broadstrike’ where the coin makes transient contact with a stiff, but still mobile collar.” This coin is in the private collection of Bob Russell. The letter N from UNUM and part of the laurel leaf branch can be seen clashed into and in front of Roosevelt’s face in the image above. The top of the torch and a partial leaf from the reverse die can be seen under Roosevelt’s chin. Roosevelt’s jaw line and the D of GOD can be seen clashed into the area between the torch and the top laurel leaves. The bottom of Roosevelt’s bust can be seen clashed just above the oak leaves. The image to the left shows the forehead of Roosevelt clashed through the word PLURIBUS.
