1996 (P) Roosevelt Dime - Atypical Die Clash ADC-10C-1996-01

Description

ADC-10c-1996-01 is an atypical die clash on a 1996-P Roosevelt dime, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. The clash itself is a single strong event, but the coin carries a more involved error that MDC has Mike Diamond explain. In his reading, the obverse shows heavy collar clash, made more pronounced by the obverse rim flaring outward, while the reverse is a partial collar error. The collar began higher than normal and was pushed down when the spreading edge of the coin met it and dragged across its top, which stretched the reeding marks on the edge. Diamond likens it to a forced broadstrike, in which the coin briefly contacts a collar that is stiff but can still move. The coin is in Bob Russell's private collection. On the obverse, the N of UNUM and part of the olive branch are clashed into and ahead of Roosevelt's face, and the top of the torch with part of a leaf shows under his chin. On the reverse, Roosevelt's jawline and the D of GOD appear between the torch and the top leaves, the bottom of his bust sits just above the oak leaves, and his forehead runs through PLURIBUS.
