1996 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Showing a close spread directed toward the rim, the 1996 WDDO-004 Lincoln Memorial cent presents doubling on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date. The toward-the-rim displacement means the secondary image sits slightly outward from the primary, creating a subtle thickening effect on the outer edges of these design elements. Obverse die markers provide essential attribution: a small die gouge on the back of Lincoln's neck just above the collar and a second small gouge just below the center of the collar establish the die's identity independently of the doubling. On the reverse, a small die gouge at the center of the Memorial steps serves as a confirmation point. Cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1996 1¢ WDDO-004, no other cross-references are currently known. Close-spread doubled dies require careful examination under magnification, as the narrow separation between primary and secondary images can be mistaken for die deterioration doubling or strike doubling — neither of which carries the same numismatic significance as true hub doubling.
