1995 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Spanning five obverse elements with a notable dual-intensity pattern, DDO-002 on the 1995-P Lincoln Memorial Cent presents medium spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD, and Lincoln's vest alongside light spread on 95 of the date and WE TRUST. Die markers UVC-2443 and DMR-004 confirm this working die. The intensity gradient — medium on the upper-left elements (LIBERTY, IN GOD, vest) but light on the lower and right elements (date and remainder of motto) — maps the hub displacement's geometric effect across the obverse die face, with the medium-classified areas receiving the peak offset and the light areas sitting closer to the displacement's falloff zone. The partial-date involvement is particularly diagnostic: only the 95 of 1995 shows detectable doubling, meaning the 19 digits fell at positions where the hub offset dropped below the visibility threshold while the 95 digits occupied positions with sufficient displacement to register light spread. Lincoln's vest — a small sartorial detail on Victor David Brenner's portrait — provides a sensitive diagnostic surface where even moderate hub offset produces visibly doubled fabric lines. The 1995 Philadelphia date is famous in numismatic circles primarily for DDO-001, a dramatic doubled die that generated widespread collector excitement and media attention. DDO-002, while less dramatic than its celebrated sibling, represents an independently significant variety with its own unique die characteristics and five-element spread pattern. Struck in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams — the post-1982 composition standard — the 1995-P's medium spread on LIBERTY and IN GOD is most readily confirmed under 5x to 7x magnification, with the vest doubling requiring slightly higher magnification due to the fine detail involved.
