CU-10c-1994P-01R Cud
Error
Description
Carrying the Cuds on Coins designation CU-10c-1994P-01R and cross-referenced as RDC-94P-01R (entry dated October 1, 2013), this reverse rim cud on a 1994-P Roosevelt Dime represents a major die break where the working die fractured at the edge, creating a raised featureless area at the coin's rim. The "01R" suffix indicates this is the first cataloged reverse cud for the 1994-P Roosevelt Dime, establishing its premiere position in the cud census for that date-mint. Roosevelt Dimes from the 1990s were produced in enormous quantities at the Philadelphia Mint — the 1994-P mintage exceeded one billion coins — and this massive production volume required thousands of working dies, each subject to the mechanical stresses that can cause rim fractures. Despite the high mintage, authenticated cud specimens remain scarce as a percentage of total production because damaged dies were typically identified and removed from service relatively quickly by Mint quality control procedures. John R. Sinnock's enduring Roosevelt Dime design, in continuous production since 1946, features Roosevelt's left-facing portrait on the obverse and the torch of liberty flanked by olive and oak branches on the reverse. The copper-nickel clad composition (2.27 grams, 17.9 mm diameter) replaced the original 90% silver in 1965. Collectors examining potential cud specimens should look for a smooth, raised area at the reverse rim that lacks any design detail, distinguishing it from die chips or minor rim irregularities.
