1994 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Type I Counter Clash CCLTI-1C-1994-01

Description

CCL(TI)-1c-1994-01 is a Type I counter clash on a 1994 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. MDC adds that it could also be treated as an atypical die clash, since it is very strong, has several staggered clashes, and two of them came from a tilted die. Daville E. Williams of Florida supplied the coin. There were three clashes. The first was the most centered, with a slight rotation not seen in the strike, something MDC says is fairly common and still unexplained. The second was the weakest; it may have been tilted to the east, since the obverse shows no trace of it on the left. Its hammer die was tilted differently, as faint marks show: one from the N of ONE under IN GOD, and one from the back of Lincoln's head. The third was the most off center and left most of the marks, while the first left very few. The counter clash itself was presumably made by the third clash. Its three lines at the bottom come from the base line of the Memorial on the reverse die, and lines above the N of CENT were made by Lincoln's forehead. When the third clash came, the first two sets of marks, now acting as design, were pressed back onto the obverse die slightly offset, because the hammer die moved each time. Below the bust, the tilt in the first and third clashes moved parts of STATES OF onto the obverse, while the lower bust line crossed STATES OF. Matching marks show on the reverse below the left urn, where the third clash is absent because of the hammer die's tilt. The obverse has a die crack too large for dies in such an early state; it may have formed during the clashing. Because of the clashes and the crack, both dies were most likely retired. MDC notes that more marks are not pictured, including parts of the date digits, the roof line and the cornice.
