1994 Type I Counter Clash CCLTI-1C-1994-01
Error
Description
Discovered by Daville E. Williams of Florida, CCLTI-1c-1994-01 on the 1994 Philadelphia Lincoln cent is a triple-staggered counter clash combining Type I counter clash and atypical die clash (ADC) characteristics, with two tilted die events among three separate clashings. The first clash was the most centered, the second weakest and possibly tilted east (absent on the left of the obverse), and the third most off-centered. A rotation difference between clash and strike positions — common but still unexplained — is present. The counter clash transferred the Memorial base line below N of CENT onto the obverse, while Lincoln's forehead generated lines above N of CENT on the reverse. Letters TS from STATES appear underneath Lincoln's bust, deposited during tilted clashings as the lower bust line cut through STATES OF. When the third clash occurred, prior clash marks were transferred back to the opposite die slightly offset, creating the counter clash effect. An obverse die crack, unusual for early die state, may have formed during the clashing itself. Both dies were likely retired due to severity, making survivors scarce. Cataloged by MadDieClashes as CCLTI-1c-1994-01. The three lines at the bottom of the counter clash are from the reverse die and were produced by the bottom or base line of the Memorial building. The corresponding clash marks can be sen on the reverse die below the left URN.
