Description

A strong Class IV spread to the west resulted in extra Memorial columns in the 10th and 11th Memorial bays on this 1994 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent doubled die reverse, designated Wexler Variety ID 1994 1¢ WDDR-007. The Class IV offset hub doubling that characterizes this variety produced the same westward displacement pattern seen on several other 1994-P doubled die reverses, where the shifted hub impression creates partial or nearly complete extra columns alongside the original colonnade in the right-side bays of the Memorial. Cross-referenced as Crawford CDDR-009 and Coppercoins 1994P-1DR-003, this variety carries multiple independent catalog designations that facilitate cross-referencing between the major doubled die reference systems. The die markers provide clear attribution details. On the obverse, numerous light die scratches running from west to east can be found in the field behind Lincoln's head. On the reverse, a die scratch runs from SSW to NNE through the lower D in UNITED. The obverse die scratch field behind Lincoln's head is a broad zone marker that narrows candidates quickly, while the specific reverse scratch through the D in UNITED serves as a precise confirmation point.
