1994 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006
Error
Description
Like WDDR-004, the variety now cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 1994 1¢ WDDR-006 is a replacement listing on the 1994 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent — the original entry was a strong "wavy steps" variety that was reclassified as a trail die phenomenon and removed from the doubled die catalog. The WDDR-006 number was then reassigned to the current variety, a strong Class IV spread to the west that resulted in extra Memorial columns in the 10th and 11th Memorial bays. Class IV offset hub doubling produces lateral displacement of the entire design, and when directed westward on the Memorial reverse, the shifted impression creates ghost columns alongside the original colonnade, most visibly in the outermost bays where the displacement is geometrically amplified. The die markers include obverse features: a die scratch runs northeast from the right side of the Y in LIBERTY, a die scratch runs east from the lower lip, and several die scratches run northeast from the chin and lips. On the reverse, a die gouge can be found to the right of the upper T in CENT. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are currently known.
