1992 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

A tilted extra eyelid projecting east of Lincoln's normal eyelid gives WDDO-002 of the 1992 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent one of the most anatomically striking doubled die diagnostics in the series. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-VIII, this variety places its strongest doubling on a facial feature — the eyelid — where even modest displacement produces a visually dramatic result because the human eye is naturally drawn to another eye. The extra eyelid appears tilted rather than simply offset, indicating the hub rotated slightly during the second impression rather than shifting in a purely linear direction. Supplementary doubling also appears in Lincoln's beard, though this secondary area requires closer examination to detect. The eyelid doubling is strong enough that experienced attributors can sometimes spot it at 5x magnification, making this one of the more accessible doubled die varieties for collectors without high-powered optics. Diagnostic die markers include a die gouge below the first nine in the date on the obverse and a die scratch extending southeast from Lincoln's beard. The CONECA 1-O-VIII designation places this in the eighth class of obverse doubling in that organization's classification framework. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper, weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 19mm.
