1992 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST characterizes WDDO-001 of the 1992 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent — a spread-towards-center doubling pattern where the secondary hubbing impression displaced design elements inward toward the coin's center rather than outward toward the rim. The upper portion of IN GOD WE TRUST shows the doubling most prominently, with the letters carrying visibly thickened strokes compared to their normal single-impression weight. The date and LIBERTY also exhibit extra thickness, though the magnitude varies across these elements based on their position relative to the hub's pivot point during the second impression. Diagnostic die markers provide attribution support: on the obverse, die gouges appear near the W of WE, between the G and O of GOD, and between the T and Y of LIBERTY. The reverse carries a vertical gouge above the E of STATES and a gouge above the crossbar of the E in AMERICA. The spread of doubling across three geographically separated text groups — date at the bottom, LIBERTY on the left, and IN GOD WE TRUST along the top — confirms that the hub displacement was large enough to affect elements across the full obverse layout. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper, weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 19mm.
