Description

Bearing the primary Wexler DDR designation for the 1991-D Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-001 presents Class II distorted hub doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM across Felix Schlag's reverse. Class II doubling results from lateral displacement between hub impressions without rotation, producing uniform directional shift where all four words display consistent thickening in the same direction. The involvement of the complete motto indicates the displacement zone encompassed the full width of the upper reverse field. A particularly distinctive pair of obverse die markers accompanies this variety: two die gouges appear below Jefferson's nostril, creating small raised features on struck coins that provide an unmistakable attribution checkpoint. These gouges — incuse marks in the die steel — are independent of the reverse doubling and visible at relatively low magnification. No significant reverse markers have been noted. The 1991-D Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel). Examine E PLURIBUS UNUM under 7x magnification for uniform Class II displacement, then verify the two die gouges below the nostril on the obverse.
