Description

Fourth in the reverse doubled die census for the 1991-D Jefferson nickel, DDR-004 exhibits light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM — the Latin motto positioned above Felix Schlag's Monticello depiction on the reverse of the Jefferson nickel design that has been in production since 1938. VarietyVista cataloged this variety under die identifiers UVC-1504 and DMR-005, with a particularly informative Stage A notation: a small die gouge dot is present to the left of the lower left building base at early die state, and the obverse is also at EDS. Stage B at mid die state and Stage C at late die state remain unconfirmed. The die gouge dot near the building base provides a valuable secondary diagnostic that is independent of the motto doubling, allowing collectors to confirm the correct die before evaluating the subtle inscription variety. The comment notation records that this variety can be found in Mint Sets — the annual uncirculated coin sets produced by the Mint — indicating that specimens are available in the superior-condition format of the official Mint Set packaging, where the special finish may enhance the visibility of the light doubling compared to standard circulation strikes. Light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM requires careful examination under magnification, as the secondary impression closely overlaps the primary letterforms, producing thickened character strokes rather than clearly separated doubled images. Collectors should first locate the small die gouge dot to the left of the lower left building base on the reverse to confirm the correct die, then examine E PLURIBUS UNUM under 15-20x magnification with oblique lighting to reveal the enhanced thickness on the motto letters. Checking Mint Set coins may provide the best attribution opportunities due to their generally superior surface preservation.
