Description

Light doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM characterizes this Denver-minted Jefferson Nickel variety, cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-006 with die classification UVC-1792 and die marriage DMR-007. A diagnostic light vertical die scratch running through the O of OF on the reverse helps identify early die state specimens, while the obverse also presents in early die state. Mid and late die states remain unconfirmed, suggesting the die may have been retired or the variety has not yet been documented across its full production life. This variety can be found in official U.S. Mint Sets, which sometimes preserve die varieties in higher quality than coins pulled from circulation — Mint Set examples may show sharper doubling detail with original luster intact. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, selected through a 1938 design competition to accompany his Jefferson portrait, served as the standard reverse from 1938 through 2003.
