1989 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1989 WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1989 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The date shows strong extra thickness, spread toward the center, and LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST show lesser extra thickness. On obverse Stage A, a small gouge sits inside the upper part of the second 9 of the date. By obverse Stage B the die has been abraded, leaving many scratches, mostly WNW/ESE, on both sides of the bust. Reverse Stage A has parallel scratches curving NE off the O in ONE at its top, more parallel scratches heading NW off the top of the T in CENT, and many scratches beneath the Memorial running mostly NW/SE. By reverse Stage B the die has been heavily abraded, and many scratches, now mostly WNW/ESE, cover the whole reverse. Lou Coles submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
