1988 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Transitional Reverse Design WTRD-004

Description

1988 WTRD-004 is a transitional reverse design on the 1988 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as a 1988 cent struck with the 1989 reverse design. On obverse Stage A, a scratch heads SE from the base of the L in LIBERTY; another starts at the top of the L and runs SE to the I; and a third goes SE from the top of the R to the U of TRUST. Parallel scratches point NW off the lower back of Lincoln's head, and more parallel scratches extend ESE from his bowtie. On obverse Stage B, the ESE scratches from the bowtie can still be seen, while the rest of the Stage A markers were abraded away. New on Stage B: a long scratch crossing the E in LIBERTY on its right side, running SSW to NNE; a SW-to-NE scratch between the bottoms of the W and E in WE; a scratch running NNW from the middle of the nose; and several scratches running NNW or NNE above the TY of LIBERTY. On reverse Stage A, right of the T in CENT, parallel scratches run NNW to SSE, with one more to the left of that T. A scratch runs SE below the designer's initials, and from the F in OF, starting at its top, a scratch runs east to the first A in AMERICA. One extends SW from the lower left of the I in AMERICA, and above that first A, several short scratches reach WSW from the rim. Reverse Stage B is the same as Stage A. Joseph Koelling submitted Stage A and Tanaka Davis Stage B. CONECA lists it as Die #4, and Crawford as CTRD-003.
